Both charity and justice have an important part to play in poverty alleviation; individual responses (charity) and social and systemic responses (social justice) are equally essential.
The Rok Kern program is designed around the dual aims of encouraging participants to think about what big picture actions they can take to make a difference in the lives of others (social justice) and what responses they can make to specific individuals (charity).
This course develops an understanding of the definitions of charity and justice as well as the similarities and differences between them.
- Highlight the difference between charity (as a personal solution to a problem) and social justice (as a systematic solution to a problem)
- Discuss the value of both approaches, recognising that both are necessary
- Identify the roles that people can play in both systems
